Did You Know that NOT ALL Backlinks from YouTube.com are ‘No Follow’ links?

Almost everyone knows that backlinks from YouTube.com are ‘no follow’ and probably have little SEO value which makes YouTube close to useless in terms of building backlinks to any web pages outside YouTube.

There is a heated debate in the SEO world about whether ‘no follow’ backlinks actually count for SEO or not. I recommend you watch this video from Matt Cutts – the “official” from Google’s web spam team about the SEO value of ‘no follow’ backlinks.

My personal point of view is similar to Google’s “official” point of view – it was pointless for Google to introduce all this ‘no follow’ stuff and then, for some reason, stop playing into this game and start counting ‘no follow’ backlinks in it SEO algorithms. This is my personal point of view, I respect the right of others having other opinions on this tricky SEO issue.

In any case, I have definitely great news for all backlink lovers, because …

Inside the user profile section of your YouTube.com channels. For example, if you go to my Youtube channel and scroll down the page a little to see the Profile section, and inside this section you will notice a backlink. And this is a real SEO backlink, not a ‘no follow’ link, 100% full force SEO backlink.

See the screenshot below to see where exactly it is located in the Profile section.

This is a backlink from PR4 page.

I am not trying to say that all YouTube.com channel pages have high Google PR – lots of them have PR0. But in any case, this is a backlink. Check it and you will see – it has no ‘no follow’ in the HTML source code.

There is one disadvantage about this backlink in profile section – you don’t have any option to use anchor text of this backlink. All you can do is simply place a URL, and no fancy games with anchor text and keyword hunting here. And yes, this is a disadvantage, anchor text based links are the best sort. One full-force SEO backlink from YouTube.com is not bad though.

Is this the Only place On YouTube.com Where the Backlink Comes without ‘No Follow’?

Based on my vast research, I can say in all other places the outgoing backlinks have ‘no follow’. I don’t pretend to be the source of ultimate truth here. If you want to guarantee your search engine optimization that is at least as effective as your competitors, a similar technique involves finding all the sites that backlink to your competitors, and offering them a monetary incentive to add your link to their websites. You can find these websites by using Google and typing in “link:www.yourcompetitorslink.com.” Getting these backlinks to your site will contribute to your website as much as it does theirs, thereby canceling out their ranking advantage from these links.

Keyword Research, SEO & You = Success?

Lets talk about keyword research for your website. If you will target the wrong keywords with your SEO campaign you will lose the battle even before it begins. Nowadays you cannot expect to rank for broad match highly competitive keywords like “weight loss” or “build muscle” – the sites that are on the first page of Google (and that should be your primary goal) are several years old and have tens or even hundred of thousands backlinks, it is almost impossible to outrank them with a brand new website in a short period of time.

Alternatively, it would be easy to rank on the first place for the phrase “cool and stupid shoe widgetization” but can you imagine anyone searching for that ?

So our goal is to find long tail keywords, related to your site’s theme that have many searches per month and low competition. All the SEO experts call that “niche marketing”. Niche marketing is the way to go for us that don’t have large budgets and a staff of hundred people to back up our SEO campaigns.

There are unlimited amount of niches that you have never heard of. Like “shiny steel can openers” and “dstt cards”. “World of Warcraft mining guide” and “fish oil supplements”. Find such a niche that is not too competitive, do a proper keyword research, write content around that topic and bang! – you have got a niche website that is getting easy traffic and hopefully generates some money. Not all niches are money makers though but a lot of them can make money with Adsense or affiliate products. If there is no product you can create your own and market it, but that is another discussion.

Lets stay on track with the keyword research. There are a lot of keyword tools out there that makes our life easier.

As an example, let’s assume we have a website that is selling baseball bats. Now if you thought that your goal is to rank first for “baseball bats”, good luck with that.
Ideally, you are looking for 2-4 words combinations that have more than 10,000 searches per month and less than 20,000 competing websites – usually it is fairly easy to hit the first page of Google with these. Although it is also depending on factors like your niche, how much you are making per visitor etc.

Even if there are a few competitors, always check the sites that are on the first page. Authority sites like Wikipedia, university sites and such usually have tons of backlinks and are hard to beat.

The internet is a huge place, so whilst you will find a lot of competition in some niche’s there is a lot of business to be had. If you look hard enough you will find the gaps and then you can exploit them.

Part 3. The Age of Google.

Its 2004 and three major search engines remain; MSN (now Bing), Yahoo! and of course Google. The era of keyword spamming is over. These remaining three start incorporating page ranking factors into their algorithms. Content providers and webmasters have to rely on creativity to promote and generate links to achieve long term increases in search engine rankings.

By 2005 Google starts taking into account a users search history to come up with personalized search results when logged in. Then 2 years later Google starts a campaign against paid links that affect Pagerank. Another 2 years on and the company announces it will attempt to stop the effects on Pagerank from “nofollow” links.

In todays time, SEO is for the most part, a conversation with Google search. The search engine has over 70% of the market and is the place you have to be seen, if you intend driving any worthwhile volume of organic traffic. SEO Campaigns are far more labor intensive and complex now than they were a decade ago, but this is good thing from a quality perspective. Users get better, more relevant search results and providers actually have to provide value in order to get higher rankings on the serps.

A Star is Born.

The heavy reliance of on site factors such a keyword density, which could be (and was being) directly manipulated by webmasters to control their rankings had gotten many search engines in difficulty. To offer useful search results to internet users, search engines had to alter the way in which ranking of pages, that actually were relevant and offered valuable content was performed. More complex algorithms had started being developed that took into account off-site factors, such as directory age and link popularity to determine rankings. The cracking of search engine algorithms became a more difficult and sophisticated task.

At this time the head of the search engine pack was Alta Vista with the balance split between Lycos, MSN, Yahoo and InfoSeek. All of these still exist today but are (as we know) less favored. InfoSeek and AltaVista have offloaded their search, both of which are now ‘powered by Yahoo!’.

Even though algorithm had improved black hat SEO’s were still manipulating them and site theft and page jacking was rampant. On September4 1998 Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google algorithm ‘PageRank’, determined site rankings by measuring the quantity and quality of the inbound links. Google’s superior, relevant search results immediately attracted a loyal bunch of followers and the competing search engines began to realize how important it was to keep up with Google’s new page ranking technology.

The new millennium dawned and Google was solidifying its lead and fast becoming the de-facto search engine. The former front runners were just as fast becoming internet history. In fact by 2001 Excite, Lycos, AltaVista and Hotbot were all but abandoned by users.

A Short History of SEO

Part 1. The Early Years

The actual term SEO (search engine optimization) started being thrown around in 1997. Webmasters and content providers started doing SEO in the mid 1990’s. What is SEO today however is though quite a drastic revolution from what constituted SEO back then.

People started to mess around with SEO concepts in the days when Yahoo was the dominant force in the search engine space. Back then webmasters only needed to submit their URL’s the different search engines. These search engines would send spiders to crawl and index the sites. As soon as the realization was made of having your website on the first page of a search engine’s results, they began in earnest for ways to manipulate the algorithms used to create these results.

Search engine algorithms relied on on-site information to determine page rankings, in other words they relied on information that was provided by the webmaster. Things such as meta tags, density and index files. All webmasters needed to do was put in the right keywords in the sufficient density and they would start seeing front-page search engine rankings in no time. The web content providers also started to manipulate source code to get clients higher rankings. This started to result in SERP’s becoming unreliable and often filled with spam pages who’s keyword tags did not accurately represent the actual content of the page.

The first algorithm ‘crackers’ appeared around 1997. Being able to decode a search engines algorithm (which back then was quite possible), unscrupulous webmasters could get sites into the top 10 as their will. In 1997 several SEO providers decoded Excites algorithm to its full extent of 35 parameters.

What is a Link Network and Why it Has a Massive Impact on Your SEO Strategy and Google Ranking.

Every page on your website has a link network, this network of links is made up of both internal and external links so what is it about them the Google uses to calculate the actual pagerank.

At a high level , there are 3 factors that your link network will influence in respect to page rank and what you must understand about them.

1. The Number of External links

The quantity of external links to a page, suggest to Google that the page contains worthwhile content. After all if an external source has taken the time to link back to a particular page it must be for a reason. However because it is possible fairly easily to manufacture volumes of links analyzing the quantity is only a small part of Google’s calculation.

2. The Authority of the linking pages

Essentially when another site links to a page it transfers some of its authority to the page it is linking to. So if a site with a page rank of zero links to one of your pages, Google factors “zero” into this part of its calculation. Although Google’s exact algorithm is a well kept secret, it is known that it is important to note that page rank is not a linear scale. i.e. A page rank of 5 does not have 5 times more authority than a page with a rank of 1. The number of total search results is also included as a multiplier. So in a case of a total 1000 search results, simply put, a page with rank of 5 will have at least 80% more authority than a page with a rank of one. This is not including all the other factors (known and not known) included in the Google algorithm.

Links from higher ranked sites have more authority to share and that authority is what will contribute to the PR of the site it is linking to.

3. Anchor text

Anchor text is used to determine the actual topic of the content and its relevance. If the phrase “Guaranteed Search Engine Optimization” , “Guaranteed SEO” or similar phrases are used as the text behind which all the external links is placed Google recognizes this and understands that the destination site is about Guaranteed SEO.

I see so many people dropping their links into forums and as blog comments, regardless of the subject matter of the sites and their own websites. If you have to choose one of the backlinking tasks to focus on in order to build your page rank start with point 2, and try wherever possible use good anchor text. Following through with a quantity of these quality ‘well anchored’ backlinks will work wonders for page rank.

I have been getting quite a bit of spam lately to my blog in the form of (attempted) track backs and ping backs from spammers. They are simply just keyword stuffed renditions of nothing. Yes, you may of heard about it already. It’s not a new thing that certain policies are reviewed and this is just the latest one of those, for sure. It is though fairly strategic in nature and, worth considering the implications that it could have for your targeted web traffic.

Google has started coming down hard on affiliate advertisers using PPC. Lets understand why? It’s because (in the eyes of google) affiliates offer little or no value on their sites. The users experience is degraded and therefore Google is degraded. Something that is against the Google philosophy obviously.

And it’s not only limited to affiliates, some niche’s such as “Acai berry”, “Weight loss” and Home Business are also being heavily scrutinized and slapped at slightest lack of credibility.

Now this is an interesting twist from the “Big G”, as the initial success PPC also known as Adwords was largely brought about by affiliate marketers and this would still form a large portion of Goggle’s revenue today. However Google is prepared to ‘clean up’ these areas even at its own cost, because its mission first and foremost, is to serve relevant valuable content to it users.

What does this mean if PPC is your only, primary or secondary forms of marketing and Google no longer permits your ads? Your traffic is going down, W A Y D O W N !

5 Essential SEO Resources to Get More Traffic to Your Website

We all need traffic to our websites, and preferably the organic variety. (i.e Traffic derived from people searching on the search engines ) Some of us are aware that the majority of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) practices take some time to take affect.

Organic traffic

Getting it can be complex and enduring, and it’s influenced by some different factors, including:

The existing optimization of your website
The age of your domain and,
Your skill in working with these

There are ways however, to get SEO results that you can start now that will make a big improvement.

Here are 5 SEO Resource areas to work on so you can start seeing (at least) a small increase in the website traffic.

1. Keyword Basics:

Do your research – this is most important.

Free tools and services at your disposal such as the Google external keyword tool (search for this on google it will pop straight to the top). Once you’re up to speed with that move into the paid (more advanced) programs and tools out there. Keyword density is a thing of the past, there is no density you should be shooting for. Natural inclusion of your targeted keywords is today’s emphasis, working them in wherever possible without being artificial or excessive.

Hint: The quickest results can be made by targeting a larger number of terms that have a lower level of competition.

2. Make Great URLS:

There are many steps that go into making great URLs. Start from picking a domain name that is memorable, short and includes your main keyword. Whilst hyphens are ok, remember though more than two begins to get spam-like and excessive.

For your individual page name(s), include a relevant keyword, so that each URL looks something like;
www.your-keyword.com/targeted-page-keyword.html. When possible, avoid using dynamic page variables like session IDs.

These add a lot of unnecessary junk to your page URLs.

Hint: If you already have a site and can’t adjust the page structure to use keywords in it’s URLs, then you may want to consider
buying additional domains ( to create mini sites) to support various areas within your niche. These mini sites will drive traffic to your main site.

3. Find Long Tail Keywords:

Long tail keywords are often the secret to great search engine rankings. Long tail keywords include at least three words or more, and when you find the ones pertaining to your niche you will be facing less competition. Additionally, the resulting traffic
you’ll generate as a result will be much more targeted, and you’ll see better results.

Hint: It will help to add long(er) tail keywords into your URL’s as well (ref #2). Doing a quick search and you will see that
most “gurus” agree. The buyers are found with the Long Tail words.

4. Smart Internal Links:

Websites should always properly use their internal links to their own benefit. It’s an easy way to help each of your pages gain a higher and more targeted search engine ranking. Make sure to include each page’s main targeted keyword or phrase in the internal link, and always be sure to reference your other pages with links within your site’s content as much as possible when
appropriate.

E.G: You sell a type of printer. Make sure that anywhere that your keyword is found on your site that the keyword is linked to the
specific product page. This will assist the individual product page rank higher in the search engines.

5. Use HTML:

The benefits of various script languages and other code are lost when they aren’t searchable in the search engines. Everything you do you want to be helping your cause of ranking. This means sticking to easily accessed HTML for your website(s). Avoid excess forms, frames of any kind, or any code that isn’t searchable.

Hint: Use WordPress. Google Loves WordPress. If you haven’t yet, look for ways to use WordPress in your business.
